In the End It’s Still My Choice…All Things Considered

People have choice. It’s our birthright. We come to life and have the responsibility to make the choices in life that suit us. And that’s a blessing. I’m really glad that I get to make my own choices but I’m  also constantly surprised by how hard it is to make my own choices. In every choice I make I consider tons of people, issues and possibilities. And this is also our responsibility, to be actively conscious of the repercussions of our personal choices. As much as we are free agents we are still ultimately responsible to our partners, families, friends, community and consciousness on the whole. Heavy baggage!

It’s no wonder that we’ll grab opportunities to let someone else make our choices for us. Sometimes we just want a break. Letting someone else decide for us let’s us off the hook temporarily and it’s nice to feel looked after – like I said…temporarily. The way someone else makes choices, how they consider things, how they weigh the value of factors either appeals to us or doesn’t. It determines the success of our partnerships in business and marriage, it determines how well we play with others, it determines how well we raise our children.

Making decisions is a powerful responsibility. Invariably what we decide will also determine the fate of others. It can’t be helped. The quality of our life is determined by the quality of the decisions we make.  It becomes very important to know what you stand for. What are your morals, ethics and values about life? What do you condone, tolerate, and hold in esteem? If you can come to understand what is truly important to you and what is not, you will create a guideline for your life. When you have that it is much easier to know how to make your decisions.

Come to know where your weaknesses lie, where you need help in making decisions, where you need to trust others almost completely. Not choosing to decide is still a decision – probably one of the most important stands you’ll ever make. When we give all our power over to someone else to decide in our stead, we better be able to trust them implicitly. They hold our life in their hands and they better be strong enough to carry us. When we give that power to someone weaker than us we will surely fall. I’ve seen people choose to do exactly that just so they can ferociously lay blame and fault, not realizing that it was their own fault for giving up their right to choose.

In marriage we have to decide our decision-making roles. Do you like to be led, do you like to lead, do you need to need a partner with whom to hammer out solutions with? Or more likely it’s a mix of the three. Do you know over which issues you like to assume which hat? Do you realize what your emotional triggers are that ultimately drive the choices you make. I’ll give you a hint; fear and love are the driving forces behind all decisions. Making good choices depends directly on how willing and ready we are to look and accept the truth of a situation. If we are continuously making bad decisions with miserable outcomes we have to look at what our personal motivation is. Another hint: behind every bad decision lies a mountain of fear. It’s fascinating how blind to the mountain we can become.

The thing with making decisions is while we are dealing with very personal, close to the heart kind of decisions we also have to keep our eyes fixed on the greater good. There are usually people watching, waiting, knowing they are going to be influenced by your decision, usually our children, partners and co-workers, and they are learning. They are not just idly sitting by twiddling their thumbs. Based on how you make your choices they will learn how to make theirs. Where you are weak, they will be strong, where you are wobbly, they will learn to manipulate, where you waffle they will decide. Even in weakness you have responsibility, you just won’t have the power to look after your highest good!

We exert our power in our life through the decisions or lack of decisions we make. It’s your choice!

The Music of the Spheres

One of the things that really turn me on in life is music. Not just the listening to it part, but the whole idea of it. It’s a fantastic concept to me that there are people out there who can take their thoughts, their emotions, their experiences and translate them into songs that allow others to resonate with them. Amazing.

And I don’t care what the genre is or the time period it comes from either, it’s all incredible. There is absolutely no way for me to sit still if there is a song in the air. Everyone in my family; parents, siblings, and all the children love music. We all dance, we all sing (some of us brilliantly, some of us badly, but all loudly!) and we all listen to it whenever we can. It is the backdrop to every gathering. But that’s the thing with music. It amplifies the backdrop rhythm of the energy of life back to us so that even the densest of us can get connected.

Music surrounds us, permeates us and aligns us with all that is harmonious in the universe.  When I first heard the phrase “the music of the spheres” I was instantly transported out of my mind into the workings of the universe. I can’t adequately describe the awareness that moved through me. I could ‘hear’ the sound of the planets turning in space, like a ginormous turbine, slowly pulsing the vibrations of life throughout the universe(s), and then I became aware of  ‘feeling’ the end result of those pulsations with the breezes blowing through the trees and in the rhythm of my own heart. I felt my heart open and receive the vibe flooding my soul with joy and awe!

In the moment that I heard that phrase I became instantly aware of my interconnectedness with all of life in our universe, I knew that I was integral to the cause and effect system that governs our dualistic expression of life on earth, just as our sun is. Nothing is too small, or too insignificant to cause effect. Every living species, every thought, every emotion, every giggle and every tear creates a ripple of vibration that wiggles its’ way out into the universe, attracts to similar vibrations,  is caught up in the mass vibration and eventually results in the turning of the planets which in turn cause the vibrations, re-energized and re-calibrated with more potential to slowly find their way back to earth, consciousness and who knows where else.

With music we are entrained to a vast pulsation that connects us to all life and all symbiotic expressions. The power of concert is to simultaneously connect us to like-minded hearts and souls. When we listen to a radio station and sing or tap along with a song we simultaneously energetically connect to all the other vibrations of the voices singing and tapping along with the same song in that same moment. And I can get even bigger than that! Vibrations move for an infinite amount of time, as we sing and play our favorite music we connect to all the times those pieces have been played, revitalizing those rhythms continuously.

The most popular songs through the ages are the ones that make us feel love, hope, joy, passion, wonder and gratitude for they are the songs that celebrate the triumphs of man, the successes, the accomplishments and the history of man’s journey. The anthems, the hymns, the love songs;  literally they are what makes the world go round! They stimulate the compassionate nature of our hearts and create a resonance of energy that causes life to continue and expand. Through song we are unified throughout time with all generations. Through music we learn to identify and conquer all that is dissonant and disharmonious to the continuation of life.

So keep on singing folks – life depends on it!

Keeping Perspective

Driving down the road early this morning I was able to witness the most incredible sky. The sky was completely overcast, not a shred of blue sky to be seen anywhere. The sky was rich with texture, movement and a vast palette of colours – mostly shades of gray. Dark, heavy rain clouds, light white drifty clouds, and an amazing giant chunk of rainbow sitting right in the middle. As I drove along through the drizzle I tried to keep my eye on that bit of rainbow but gradually it become covered up and disappeared from my view. I then noticed how heavy and ominous the clouds had become. All around me the clouds were moving in different directions. Layers of clouds appeared to be spinning, some clockwise and some counter-clockwise. It felt surreal and left me feeling uneasy. I determined to remember the rainbow hiding somewhere out there beyond my current scope of vision. Now, only a few hours later, the clouds are almost gone and a clear blue sunny sky promises a great spring day.

This is how life goes, as much as we need to stay present in the now moment we can’t dwell on it. Everything is transient, everything shifts and moves all the time, everything changes. To invest your emotion with the weather will set you up for a disappointment every time. Nothing can change as quickly and often nothing can affect us as easily. We need to keep perspective.

Seeing this rainbow this morning reminded me of several things:

i) you never know what’s hidden behind the clouds

ii) even in tumultuous situations there is beauty, order and creative power

iii) nothing lasts forever, seize the moment and move on

iv) we as people are just a tiny bit of the vast manifestation that is our universe, so get a grip

And, after I found this picture on the internet when I got home I realized an even greater thing –

v) the opportunities are endless to witness a wondrous experience. Open your eyes! (this photo was posted last fall) I’m sure there have been many other such sightings just as I am sure that many people did not see what I saw even though they may have traveled the same stretch of road during the same time frame.

SPECIAL NOTE: I unfortunately didn’t have a camera this morning but found this photo on a WordPress blog “Blue Ridge Blue Collar Girl” which is almost identical to what I saw – less the blue ridge mountain range. She has absolutely stunning photos of sky shots from her front porch! Check them out if you want to be inspired by the great beauty that surrounds us. Thank you Blue Ridge Blue Collar Girl!

Fact, Faith & Superstition

So often when I introduce Reiki to someone new who’s never heard of it before, particularily men (it’s the whole left brain thing) they inform me they don’t believe in faith healing. So I tell them the facts. I tell them why Reiki doesn’t require ‘faith’ in order to work and also what the scientific world is now starting to understand about energy and the human body. Then they get on the table.

Having said that I have tremendous faith in my Reiki treatments; I trust them to work 100% of the time. I have faith that there will be change in the client’s life – even if they don’t recognize it right away. Sometimes the changes that come after a treatment are different than what the client expected or wanted to happen, but again I have faith that Reiki – Universal Life Force energy knows best. I also have faith that Reiki will continue to work for our highest good always whether we believe in it or not. And as much as all this faith sounds a bit airy fairy – my faith is based on 15 years of facts, success stories and ‘miracles’.

You see I really am a skeptical person, I have put my Reiki through the paces. It has never made sense to me to blindly trust something that could affect someone else. Further more, since I have no religious conditioning I’ve never had to have blind faith in anything in my life. Everything I’ve ever held faith in had to be proven at some point, before or later makes no difference. If I’m going to believe in something it has to hold water. So I tend to look for the leaks in theories, ideas, people, friendships, stories etc. of course this also extends to my Reiki/Healing/ teaching work. Some leaks can be easily fixed and are worth the effort, other leaks require a complete tear down and start over.

All the work that I do is prone to superstitious undertones. Reiki, tarot cards, meditation, metaphysics, positive thinking etc. Superstitious ideas like ‘healer’s can’t work on themselves’, or ‘ Reiki is witchcraft?’, ‘don’t ask for healing/abundance for yourself’ are taking decades to work their way out of human consciousness. And the new age has also brought a few strange ideas to the table for instance, the other day I met a lady who almost did a backflip trying to erase the word ‘fear’ out of the energy field around us when I suggested that our freedom is governed by our fears, She felt that just saying ‘fear’ would attract fear to her. Very bizarre. She had fear for the word fear…hmm, what’s wrong with this picture. I systematically avoid all superstitious belief systems and rituals based in superstition. My work is for the real world, grounded in facts, with real results.

I have a couple things though I am superstitious about. 1. I always pick up pennies, and if I sweep one up off the floor at home I don’t throw it out with the rest of the dirt. Because superstitiously I believe if I don’t pick it up I am throwing away good fortune.  2. I never throw out any cards, notes, or letters that have been signed with Love; again I don’t want to throw wishes of love away. 3. I have never thrown a book out in my entire life; I won’t throw knowledge or words away. Hmmm… maybe I’m just a packrat?….nah!
